In this overview you will learn how this resource provides a way to look for specific evidence of learning across seven curricular areas. To create it, Fountas and Pinnell examined a wide range of research on language and literacy learning, and asked teachers and researchers for feedback. They also examined the curriculum standards.

Each of the seven continua focus on different aspects of our language and literacy instructional framework; and each contribute substantially, in different but complimentary ways to students’ development of reading, writing, and language processes. The seven continua are:
• Interactive read-Aloud and Literature Discussion
• Shared and Performance Reading
• Writing About Reading
• Writing
• Oral, Visual, and Technological Communication
• Phonics, Spelling, and Word Study
• Guided Reading
